The original smaller patch of felt didn't hold the lock post steady in the channel. It vibrated anyway - and while the felt muted the rattle a little, it wasn't enough.

Here I've covered the width of the back of the lock post with felt, stopping low enough that it shouldn't be visible when the lock is unlocked.

This works very well - the lock can still be moved by hand and the electric lock motor, but silences the rattle.
