I stuffed the LED down the hole and it promptly fell deeper out of sight. Several tense minutes of cursing and fussing with the other end of the wire and I was able to mostly position it where it would shine out the hole.
A liberal application of hot-melt glue to the hole both fixed the LED in place and made a diffuser for the light. Excess glue was cut off flush with an exacto blade.
The LED isn't quite centered under the hole, but this is as close as I could get it, attempts to make it any better resulted in it falling out of reach inside the stalk again.
